Dear Fitness Expert,
My children are ages 13 and 17. While both are healthy and active, I cannot say that they are physically fit. They love to eat all kinds of food but they do not exercise or involve themselves in any activities. All they want to do is watch TV or play computer games while munching junk food. I do not want my kids to be obese. I tried to introduce them to sports but they said that it is too tiring. I tried to do recreational activities with them but they prefer to stay at home and do online games during the weekend. I do not want to deprive my kids of what they want but I do not want them to be overweight either. I no longer know what to do. Please help!
Yours truly,
Concerned Mother
Dear Concerned Mother,
While we all want what is best for our kids. In your case, you are concerned that they will become obese; but you should take note that there are many creative ways to keep them healthy and fit. For example, if your kids are not into sports, you can take them shopping. Walking from your home to a nearby store can be a good form of exercise.
Another good way to introduce fitness to them is dropping them off a block away from school. A 10-15 minute walk done daily can already be good cardiovascular exercise. Teenagers, both male and female, can benefit from this physical activity. Keep in mind that it does not have to be strenuous for it to be beneficial. A moderate amount of physical activities is recommended for all ages.
Assigning house chores to your kids is another great way of letting them exercise. Indeed, simple chores like mowing the lawn, doing the dishes, vacuuming the carpet, and moving furniture can get them sweating and burning those excess calories.
If you've done all you can and your kids still need to be budged into doing a little movement, then you need to call in an expert. A fitness trainer can be the person that can help them achieve optimal wellbeing. You can get in touch with such a professional on the domain.
Finally, if you want your youngsters to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you should be their role model. Set a positive example by leading an active life yourself. Moreover, include physical activities in your family's routine. Remember, that it all starts at home with a good example.
All the best,
Fitness Expert
